DESCRIPTION:

Discover the hidden side of the Meteora–Pyli UNESCO Global Geopark on an immersive 5-hour guided hike through the remarkable surroundings of Gavros, a peaceful village surrounded by towering conglomerate rock formations and known as the "Unknown Meteora." Far from the busy viewpoints of Meteora, this is a place where geology, nature, history, and local tradition come together to reveal one of the region's best-kept secrets.

Along the way, your guide shares insights into the geology that shaped these impressive conglomerate formations, together with the area's rich flora, fauna, biodiversity, local traditions, and mythology. Ancient stories of dryads, naiads, and forgotten legends reveal how nature and folklore have remained closely connected for centuries.

This carefully designed circular hike combines two distinct trails, following historic livestock paths once used by shepherds through forests, hidden clearings, rocky landscapes, and peaceful valleys. Along the way, you'll discover abandoned sheepfolds, striking viewpoints, fascinating rock formations, natural caves, and traces of the area's pastoral heritage, offering a unique glimpse into the daily life of past generations.

The second part of the route leads through a quieter section of the Geopark, crossing a charming bridge and, depending on the season, offering the opportunity to admire small seasonal waterfalls. Continuing along the trail, we visit an abandoned monastery nestled within a natural rock cavity. Hidden among the cliffs, it preserves traces of the area's spiritual heritage and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the monks and hermits who once sought solitude here.

We'll also pause at a beautifully restored natural spring hidden within the forest, where you'll have time to relax in the shade and enjoy a traditional homemade snack prepared with locally sourced ingredients before continuing the hike.

More than a hike, this experience is an immersive journey through Gavros' geology, biodiversity, mythology, and cultural heritage. As each trail reveals another layer of the region's story, the echoes of the past come alive through its forests, springs, forgotten paths, and extraordinary rock formations.
