The rural village of Gavros is a hidden gem in Thessaly, located just 20 minutes north from Kalambaka and the world-famous Meteora. Rising beneath impressive rock formations similar to those of Meteora, the village offers a quieter and more authentic alternative—what we define as “The Unknown Meteora,” a concept created by us, for those who seek a more peaceful and authentic getaway.

The rock formations of Gavros are not only visually striking but also of recognized geological importance. Formed approximately 30 million years ago, through the same processes that created Meteora, they are officially designated as a recognized geosite within the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, part of the global UNESCO network of geoparks.

Gavros presents a more pastoral and peaceful version of Meteora, where visitors can experience the rhythms of traditional countryside life, shaped by generations of shepherds and farmers who continue to maintain their way of life.

The area offers three marked hiking trails, providing accessible routes to explore the landscape. These trails offer beautiful views over the village and close interaction with the surrounding rock formations, with sections passing directly beneath the towering stone pillars. One of the most notable routes is the 6km traditional pastoral path connecting Gavros with a neighboring village of Agios Dimitrios, historically used by local communities.

In addition, several unmarked paths of particular natural beauty are available for more experienced hikers. Routes towards “Arkouda” (the Bear peak) and “Kryoneri” spring are not marked and require good orientation, but offer a more immersive experience. From the summit of Arkouda, hikers can enjoy impressive views over the village and the surrounding rock formations, while the route to Kryoneri passes through scenic deciduous oak forests, rich in biodiversity and seasonal variation.

The area also holds significant historical and spiritual value. Scattered across the rocks are abandoned Byzantine hermitages, included within the Geopark, preserving traces of early ascetic life. One of these hermitages remains in its original form, offering rare insight into the early stages of monastic life in the region.

For the adventure seekers, Gavros also offers a Via Ferrata route, a unique experience of approximately 4 hours across the rock formations. This route reveals hidden angles of the landscape, including narrow passages and small hidden gorges that are difficult to access on foot.

At the same time, the wider area is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network (both Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Areas), highlighting its rich biodiversity and important flora, fauna, and birdlife.

The Unknown Meteora of Gavros offers a more authentic and less crowded experience of the Meteora landscape, combining geological significance, natural beauty, history and living tradition.
