The holy rocks of Meteora – Where Nature Meets Spirituality

Meteora is one of the most iconic travel destinations in Greece, located in central Greece in the region of Thessaly. It rises dramatically above the town of Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki, approximately 350 km northwest of Athens. Famous for its UNESCO World Heritage monasteries and towering rock formations, Meteora attracts visitors from all over the world.

These unique rock pillars were formed around 30 million years ago, creating one of the most impressive geological landscapes in Europe. The name “Meteora,” meaning “suspended in the air,” perfectly describes the surreal scenery where ancient monasteries appear to float between earth and sky.

From the 14th century onwards, 24 monasteries were built on these vertical cliffs. Today, six active monasteries remain, preserving the spiritual and historical heritage of the region while remaining open to visitors.

Meteora is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Natura 2000 network, and included in the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, highlighting its outstanding geological, ecological, and cultural importance.

The surrounding areas enhance the visitor experience. The village of Kastraki, located directly beneath the Meteora rocks, offers a traditional atmosphere with stone houses, narrow streets, and direct access to hiking trails and viewpoints. Nearby, Kalambaka serves as the main gateway to Meteora, offering hotels, restaurants, and easy access to the monasteries. Its old town area at the base of the rocks features historic architecture, small churches, and a more authentic, traditional Greek town atmosphere.

Beyond the monasteries, Meteora offers some of the best hiking in Greece, with well-marked trails, hidden viewpoints, and dramatic landscapes. Visitors can also enjoy rock climbing, photography, and unforgettable sunsets over the Meteora rocks.

Meteora is more than just a destination in Greece—it is a unique combination of nature, history, spirituality, and adventure, making it one of the most unforgettable UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world.
