The Holy Monastery of Varlaam is one of the largest and most important monasteries of Meteora, built on a towering rock with impressive views over the surrounding landscape. It is the second largest monastery in Meteora, after the Great Meteoron, and one of the most visited.
Its history begins in the 14th century, when the hermit Varlaam settled on the rock and built the first cells and a small church. The monastery took its present form in the 16th century (around 1541–1542), when the monk brothers Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades from Ioannina rebuilt the monastery and constructed the katholikon.
The katholikon is dedicated to All Saints and is an outstanding example of post-Byzantine architecture. It is decorated with remarkable frescoes of the 16th century, created by the renowned painter Frangos Katelanos, known for their vivid expression and fine detail.
One of the most distinctive features of the monastery is the old rope-and-net hoisting system, once used to transport people and supplies before the construction of stairs. This mechanism is still preserved today as an important historical element.
Access to the monastery is via a bridge and a considerable number of steps, offering a moderately demanding but well-organized climb. Despite the effort required, the path is safe and suitable for most visitors.
The monastery also includes a small museum with ecclesiastical relics, manuscripts, and objects of monastic life, offering visitors a deeper insight into its history.
Its imposing setting, rich history, artistic heritage, and breathtaking views make the Monastery of Varlaam one of the most remarkable destinations in Meteora.
